The Club serves the communities of West Chiltington and surrounding villages, and croquet has been played at West Chiltington continuously since 1977. Originally part of the West Sussex Federation of the Women’s institute (WI) Sports and Leisure Section, it became so popular with the WI ladies that their husbands wanted to take part!! In 1995 it was mutually agreed that the Croquet Club at West Chiltington would become an independent Club.
The Club is a member of the West Chiltington Sports Association which was formed in 2004 and includes the Football and Cricket Club. As members of the Sports Association we make frequent use of the Pavilion, a modern facility built in 2014, for functions throughout the year. There is free hard standing parking available and the Pavilion toilets are available when playing.
The Club plays Golf Croquet and has two full size lawns with a membership of over 50 playing members as well as a number of social members. Players can book a slot on the lawns via the members bookings page as well as signing up to social events on the Club’s website.
Equipment is available for use by members and their guests subject to Club rules. We meet by the lawns and players are asked to wear flat shoes and be prepared for ‘English’ weather! Whites are only required for inter-club matches and tournaments. We also periodically arrange coaching sessions at the Sussex County Croquet Club at Southwick or invite a coach to our lawns, for which a small fee is charged.
We have a number of social events throughout the season and a full winter programme, a list of which can be seen on our Club’s Diary page.
Partners and spouses of playing members are welcome to join as social members which allows them to enjoy the pub lunches and social events as well as the winter programme. Prospective playing members are given 2 free sessions before deciding to join the Club. Annual membership is currently £80 and social membership £10. Visitors, playing with a member, are welcome, without charge, for a maximum of three visits annually when the lawns are not in use.
The Club is associated to Croquet England (CE) and the South East Croquet Federation (SECF). See useful links page for more information and videos on how the game is played.
