Croquet is for everyone!

Forget the image of croquet being played quietly on the vicarage lawn — modern croquet is a fun, sociable and surprisingly exciting game, and there’s a place for everyone at West Chiltington Croquet Club.

Croquet can be enjoyed by all ages and genders, and you don’t need to be particularly fit or experienced. Our handicap system means that players of different abilities can enjoy a competitive game together. Best of all, you don’t need to buy any equipment — we’ll lend you everything you need while you’re getting started. All we ask is that you wear a pair of flat-soled shoes.

Come along, have a go and make some new friends. We play Golf Croquet, a fast-paced and sociable form of the game. The basic rules can be picked up in as little as 10 minutes, so you’ll soon be joining in and playing your first game. As you become more experienced, you’ll discover the tactics and strategies that make croquet so addictive! It’s a wonderful way to get outdoors, enjoy some gentle exercise, meet new people and exercise your brain as well as your body.

When can I play?

From April to September, we hold hosted roll-ups four times a week, where everyone is welcome — whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player. We draw cards to decide who plays with whom, so just turn up and you’re guaranteed a game.

Our regular roll-ups are:

• Mondays: 10 a.m.

• Wednesdays: 10 a.m.

• Wednesdays: 2 p.m., followed by tea and cake in the Pavilion

• Fridays: 10 a.m.

• ​

Our lawns are also available at most other times during the week for games arranged between members, with some weekend play too, subject to cricket fixtures.

There’s more than croquet!

We’re not just about the game. Throughout the season we have an active social programme, including fun competitions followed by dinner at the pub — a great opportunity to get to know other members.

During the winter months, when the lawns are resting, we continue to get together for bridge, Mahjong and other games, chess, walks, coffee mornings and pub lunches. Take a look at our website Diary Page to see what’s coming up.

Whatever your experience, you’ll be welcome.

Whether you’ve never held a croquet mallet before or you’re an experienced tournament player, we’d love you to join us.

You can play simply for fun and friendship, take part in our internal competitions, or progress to friendly and league matches against other clubs. You decide how much or how little you want to play.
